Scarifying involves scratching, etching, burning, or superficially cutting designs, pictures, or words into the skin as a permanent body modification.
In the process of body scarification, scars are formed by cutting or branding the skin. Scarification is sometimes called cicatrization (from the French equivalent).
Branding took off in the mid 1980's when the Grim Reaper and HIV were being braodcast on every TV station at every ad break. Blood was taboo and as branding has no blood loss it was seen as a cleaner and safer alternative to cutting with a similar end result. The causation of a decorative scar.
While AIDS and HIV are still a huge problem and all care is taken in 'hopefully' every establishment that handles blood to prevent any risk of contamination - the fear has been overcome through education and knowledge on how the disease works.
Scarification has slowly gained in popularity again. However, branding still has it's place and it still appeals to the more adventurous. The most common question being does it hurt, most of my clients will agree that it feels a bit like running ice over sunburn, it give that skin retracting type of feeling and then we ice the area to cool it after the burn and it goes quite numb. So it is less painful than one would expect.
At Body Pleasure Piercing we use a sterile cautery pen to do freehand (drawn on) branding as well as stenciled designs as opposed to strike branding because it gives a more natural look and flexibility in design. Strike branding is a different procedure and can behard to determine depth of the brand and is limiting to the designs available.
Branding designs: Any basic design can be done so long as the lines are not close together and it does not have a lot of intricate detail. As the heat spreads from the innitial brand if lines are too close then they will blur together and become one thick blob instead of distinct lines and the brand will look messy and not how it was intended. Some people choose to get a branding done and then add detail through cutting or tattoing as combining the art forms gives a subtle and effective result.
Age Limits: Brands fade in time and are semi permanent but you must be 18yrs old with photo ID for you to get a banding done.
